Bonded together

I remember watching a family full of love, tradition, and comfort. Seeing people on a screen that looked just like me and my parents. Focusing heavily on the fact that the food that was served on their tables looked just like mine. I noticed that the same values that were always held in my household came to life on screen. Touching the soul of a young girl that recognized that your family is everything.

"Mi Familia" captures the beauty of a Mexican family's troubles, tears, and laughter. I was about ten years old when my parents showed me this film. I remember how sad I felt watching this movie, but I also felt noticed as a Latina. Though it wasn't until I got older and watched it with a different set of eyes did I notice the importance of having a loving home and what it looks like.

I felt the love of the family through a tv screen. I felt the embrace and enduring love of care. I remind myself often, or whenever I could, that when you can see your home outside of the fighting and negativity you see unconditionally. You see your mom holding your hand even when you are away. You watch your dad set up the perfect dinner when all his kids are home. Along with broken hearts come the hands that help heal you. Every tear and every shout was always cared for even if it didn't always feel like it.

Communities are essential in feeling belonging and loved. Here in Ghana, I've noticed the significance of communities and the importance of togetherness. I see it in the way friends gather and converse with one another. How hospitality is important for guests to feel welcomed. On their way to school, children pass by checking in with neighbors and strangers.

I've also noticed how when times aren't ideal, groups of people come together to create a space to feel like a family. Safe places invite friends and strangers to interact with happiness and joy.

Laughter echoes in my ear as I remember the feeling of family and love when surrounded by the right people. I see traditions here that remind me of my own. I see love here in establishments that aren't connected by blood but are connected by storytelling and comfort.

Family and communities are not always perfect people fight and are never on the same page. It's diversity, comfort, and love that bond them together.
